Detection of Facial Feature Points Using an Autoumatic Method

N. Drif, Z. Ameur

Abstract

This paper presents a novel adaptive algorithm to extract facial feature points automatically in frontal view faces; which is based on Harris corner detectors. At first, the method adopts the Viola-Jones face detector to detect the location of face and also crops the face region in an image. From the concept of the human face structure, the three relevant regions such as eyes, nose, and mouth areas are cropped in a face image. Then for each cropped relevant region the Harris detector is employed by varying different threshold values to detect the interest point from them: eye corners, nostrils and mouth corners. The methods were tested on a large frontal face IV2 database and the experiment results have achieved average success rates of 90%.
