Characterization of the Green Bands of the Fighting Against Sand Encroachment at The Gourara Region in Southwestern of Algeria

M. Ould Safi, A. Megharbi, D. Haddouche

Abstract

The region of Gourara, located In the province of Adrar in the southwest of Algeria, is very affected by sand encroachment. Since antiquity, the fight against this phenomenon has been carried out by traditional processes, namely fences and clay walls. From 2007, this region has known the installation of several green bands, made by the forest administration in framework of the biological fight against sand encroachment. This study focuses on three green bands, using phytoecological and dendrometric approaches. Floristic surveys of green bands were analyzed by the Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and Hierarchical Classification (HAC). These analyses have resulted three categories of surveys made up of 18 different species. Some of them are installed spontaneously. The dendrometric study shows that the structure of these bands is a young even-aged forest with small diameter trees, and the dominance of the microphanerophyte stratum. In the studied bands, the diameter and the height are well correlated. Besides the actions to preserve the biodiversity such as the installation of spontaneous Saharan species and the protection against sand encroachment, these bands represent a place of leisure for the public.
