Numerical simulation of spiral vortex flow with short twist tape insert

Hydrocyclone has often been used in the blending of two-phase medium. In order to study the dynamic mechanism about that the spiral flow can strengthen the transfer of mass and heat of gas-liquid two phases, which was induced by the spiral twist tape, in this paper, we used water as the medium, investigated the flow characteristics from the perspective of the spiral vortex, carried out the numerical simulation of the single-phase flow caused by short spiral twist tape in the horizontal pipe with the RSM turbulence model. The results showed that the secondary helical vortex was the first one formed in the suction surface side of the twist tape, compared with the flow field region without the effects of the helical vortex, due to the existence of the secondary helical vortex, the pressure gradient increased, the axial velocity decreased, near the wall the numerical value of tangential velocity had doubled, the radial velocity had the same magnitude order with the tangential and axial velocity; the multistage twist tape decreased the swirl intensity attenuation rate but increased the loss of pressure. By making a comparison between the calculated tangential velocity variation and the experimental results in the literature, we found that the simulation had the same rule with experiment.
