Automatic Tool for Evaluating Arabic OCR systems

Ali Ahmed, Ashraf Elsisi

Abstract

Although much work has been done concerning the evaluation of Arabic optical character recognition (AOCR) engines, the availability of tools remains an open area for research. Also, the majority of tools depend only on character-based accuracy as a measure for evaluating Arabic OCR systems. This study introduces an automatic tool for accurately evaluate AOCR engines. The proposed evaluation tool takes the output of Arabic OCR engines as input and then uses various character-based and word-based metrics to evaluate and characterize AOCR engines. The experimental results proved that the proposed tool is an effective tool for AOCR testing, comparison, and furthermore characterization.
