Abstract

Dense Global Positioning System (GPS) network provide a better opportunity to understand the mechanisms of postseismic deformation following the 2010 M7.8 Mentawai earthquake. We employed GPS data sets located in western Sumatra, which recorded postseismic deformation signal during two years after the 2010 Mentawai earthquake. We utilized Burgers body model to investigate the contribution of viscoelastic relaxation and then extracted the contribution of afterslip as observed by GPS data. Our results indicate that the best-fit viscoelastic relaxation model shows an asthenosphere with Kelvin viscosity of 5.0±1.0×1017 Pa s and Maxwell viscosity of 1.0±1.0×1019 Pa s. We also find that afterslip dominated the near-field with a maximum slip of 0.7 m concentrated in between maximum coseismic slip patches of the 2007 Bengkulu earthquake and the 2010 Mentawai earthquake. We also find that during the long-term deformation, viscoelastic relaxation affects far-field deformation while afterslip significantly influenced the near-field region.
