Glaucoma Detection using Digital Signal Processor

Gourang D. Naik, Nataraj A. Vijapur, R. Srinivasa Rao Kunte

Abstract

In the field of medical image processing, a major research topic is the identification of eye diseases in retinal image. Glaucoma is one of the eye diseases, which is caused by change in rate of outflow of aqueous humor which in turn results in an increase in Inter Ocular Pressure in the eye. Glaucoma causes blindness, if detected in early stage its progress can be stopped. According to World Health Organization by the year 2020 about 79.11 million people will be infected by Glaucoma. As of today there is no accurate electronic system for correct detection of Glaucoma; hence research is conducted to develop a method for accurate detection of Glaucoma; one such method is detection of Glaucoma using retinal fundus image, where the image is classified as Glaucomatic eye or Non-Glaucomatic eye based on the Cup to Disc Ratio (CDR). In this paper, a Clustering Based Method is used for segmentation of the Optic Disc while a Stochastic Watershed method is used for segmentation of the Optic Cup. All the methods in this paper are implemented on a Digital Signal Processor from Texas Instruments(R) namely TMS320C6748.
