Environmental Valuation of Local and External Economic Benefits of Urban Tree Cover: A Case Study in Brazil

Abstract


Palmas, in Brazil, has suffered from high temperatures, strong sunlight and the shortage of drinking water due to the lack of planning and proper management of its urban tree cover. This study has the objective of estimating the monetary value of the benefits of tree cover in the city considering Willingness to Pay (WTP) of the individuals, a technique substantiated in the Contingent Valuation Method. It was concluded that an estimated reserve price of R$ 7.32 (Logit Model) and R$ 5.56 (Turnbull estimator). The annual resources are in the order of R$ 5,093,051.04 and R$ 3,868,492.32, respectably. Such results are corroborative to the importance attributed to the services of urban tree cover and its effects on the environmental balance.
