Ecological and Geochemical Features of Technogenic Massif Transformation at ‘Severonickel’ (Russia)

M. Pashkevich, T. Petrova

Abstract

Numerous studies of technogenic massifs in mining regions have shown that mineral waste undergoes weathering and transforms into new crystalochemical phases under the influence of natural and man-made factors. This process promotes dispergation of toxic elements and their migration with ground waters. The topical character of research carried out in the impact area of companies that mine and process sulphide ores is explained by the need to decrease acidification of surface and ground waters. Dumping of sulphide-bearing wastes of ‘Severonickel’ (Murmansk Region) creates adverse ecological situations on the adjacent territories. Acid natural and drainage waters are formed which consequently leads to formation of lithologic and hydrogeochemical contamination haloes characterized with very low pH indices.

Keywords

industrial waste, acid drainage waters, X-ray fluorescence spectrophotometer, sulphide-bearing waste dumps, technogenic loads.
