Abstract

A linear shallow water model in Cartesian coordinate system is developed, using a finite difference scheme, to compute some aspects of tsunami at the west coast of Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia. The model is applied to simulate propagation of tsunami wave and its arriving time towards west coast of Thailand and Malaysia associated with the Indonesian tsunami of 26 December 2004. The model is also applied to compute water levels along the coastal belt. Computed water levels and arrival times at Phuket (Thailand) and Penang Island (Malaysia) are found to be in good agreement with the observed data. Further study indicates that, initial withdrawal of water from the coastal belt depends upon the nature of the source.
