Design and Modelling of a Long-life Short-stroke Solenoid Actuator Using Permanent Magnet Reaction

Q. P. Li, J. Man, Q. B. Li

Abstract

Magnetic reaction is usually done by multiple permanent magnets, which restrict the volume and reliability of the solenoid actuator. The paper presents a new solenoid using one ring NdFeB magnet as spring reaction, taking place of mechanical ones, thus lowering the vibration and noise and having theoretically infinite lifetime. A FEM based analysis is carried out to discuss the magnetic field distribution and to predict the force characteristics. The prototype solenoid was manufactured based on the proposed model and the experimental and simulated results agree well with each other, which indicate that the actuator has achieved a stiffness of 40N/mm, and suitable dynamic characteristics.
