Ashaley Frederick Kotey, Faustina Kyerewaa Barfi

This paper reports the results of a study on Human resource management in some Private Tertiary institutions in Ghana. The study aims to find out the methods of selection and recruitment, training and development, compensation and benefits, performance appraisal and job satisfaction of employees in some three tertiary institutions in Ghana namely:: Data Link University College, University College of Management Studies and Presbyterian University College.

Using the case study approach, convenience random sampling was used. The staff of the various universities were the target population, Ninety (90) questionnaires were distributed randomly, thirty (30) questionnaires for each institution. Out of these, Eighty (80) questionnaires were received. Twenty five (25) of these respondents were library staff, Twenty five (25) were also teaching staff and Thirty (30) were non-teaching staff.
Findings indicate that, most of the employees were taken through selection and recruitment procedures which form an essential element for employing the right staff for an organization. It was also realized from the responses that, training and development has been relegated to the background in all the three institutions hence employees lack the requisite skills for institutional development. In addition, the research revealed some of the main issues leading to high labour turnover in the various institutions. These are: inadequate salaries, non-existent benefits, non-utilization of performance appraisal, lack of policy on promotion and the non existent of employee’s rights to initiate new ideas.
