Comparison of Weibull and Normal Distributions for Bivariate Survival Data

Abstract



Modeling survival data related to human health is an important issue in statistics. The most common distributions used in the modeling of survival data are Exponential, Weibull and Gamma distributions. These distributions can be applied in the univariate case. However, when data related to a lifetime is explained by a single variable, inadequate and false results can follow. So, new lifetime distributions within a specific time period are needed for data that contains two variables. A small number of distributions have been proposed to model two-dimensional lifetime data sets. For example, Freund (1961), Marshall and Olkin (1967), and Block and Basu (1974) discussed some bivariate exponential distributions. Later, more flexible bivariate Weibull distributions have been proposed (Kundu and Dey 2009; Kundu and Gupta 2010). In this study, two different types of bivariate Weibull distributions are applied to real life data and the results are compared with bivariate normal distributions.
