Analysis of Better Life Index of OECD Countries with Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines Model
Abstract
In this study OECD Better Life Index is used to estimate the indicators affecting the life satisfaction indicator. Better Life Index contains 11 indicators as essential to well-being. Life satisfaction is one of the indicators measuring the quality of life. The most elementary usage of life satisfaction is to estimate quality of life within a country or a specific social group. Life satisfaction indicator is modeled with 10 indicators of Better Life Index for OECD countries by Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) model. According to results of MARS model, the effects of housing, income, education, civic engagement and safety indicators on life satisfaction are not statistically significant. Life satisfactions of habitants of OECD countries mainly depend on health and work-life balance indicators, employment rate, air pollution and quality of support network. The most important indicator for life satisfaction is determined as employment rate.
