Re-exploring Chebyshev’s Inequality

G. G. Djolov

Abstract

This article examines the popular Chebyshev inequality, with the aim to address some shortcomings in the complexity of the way the inequality is generally handled in statistical teachings and practice. As part of this a simplified derivation of the inequality is offered that has prospective uses as to how it is thought to students and practitioners of statistics. This is achieved by developing an intuitive understanding of the inequality through the application of accessible algebraic methods drawing on the familiar notions of the standard deviation, the range, and elementary solving techniques.
