Abstract

Collembola are commonly called as springtails which belong to class Insecta under the phylum Arthropoda inhabiting in soil to improve soil fertility. The distribution and their abundance of the species of collembola in cultivated sugarcane field in East Midnapore District, India have been studied and we also ascertained the impact of some important edaphic factors on the species of collembola in their distribution and abundance in the this study fields. The interrelationship between population of collembola and soil factors in the study site have also been dealt with. The physical factors of soil such as temperature, moisture, RH and chemical factors such as pH, organic carbon, nitrate and phosphate have been studied during this study. The statistical analysis indicates that in this sampling site the collembola population are maximum when the soil factors such as moisture, organic carbon and nitrate are significantly high and other conditions are in optimum. Among the studied soil factors, temperature and phospahte have shown a negative and significant correlation with the collembola population in this study site and the soil factors such as moisture, RH, organic carbon and nitrate have shown positive and significant correlation with the population of Collembola.
