Analysis of Data Collection Efficiency in Large-Scale Power Line Network

As a convenient and inexpensive method, power line communications (PLC) in low-voltage networks has recently received growing popularity. Several technical challenges, however, exist in low-voltage PLC due to its inherent nature. Especially for a large-scale network that includes many (more than five hundred) end-users, the success rate and response time for data collection using the low-voltage PLC assess network need to be greatly improved. In this paper, factors that affect the data collection system of low-voltage PLC in large-scale networks are discussed. Meanwhile, we propose several solutions to enhance the performance of low-voltage PLC in large-scale networks. Through optimizing the data concentrator in data collection process and the use of a novel dual-band method, the overall success rate and daily success rate of meter reading by low-voltage PLC are both significantly increased.
