Bionic Flapping-Wing Mechanism Modelling and Simulation of Flapping Wingtip Trajectory

Zhaoxia He, Lan Liu, Xijin Zhang

Based on the structure of insect’s thorax and flapping-wing theory, a bionic mechanism for flapping-wings micro air vehicle (MAV) is studied and a kinematic model of this mechanism is established which includes two linear drivers and a dashpot. According to the insects’ wingtip trajectories which are recorded by a high-speed camera, five kinds of trajectory are simulated. And different driving forces are computed when the wingtip of insects shifted with different trajectories, such as ellipse, banana, and figure of Arabic numeral “8” and double “8”. The simulation demonstrates that the wave shape of driving force is looks like sine wave or triangular wave commonly. Along the x direction, the width of the wingtip orbit is increased by the increasing of the phase separation, and vice versa. Furthermore, the asymmetrical aerodynamic force can be obtained when they flap wings in an oblique plane. The simulation results conform to the motion of most insect’s wing. By comparing the simulation and camera records, the relationship between driving forces and wingtip trajectories is helpful for the design of flapping-wing micro air vehicles.
