On the Thermo-Mechanical Coupling and Dispersion of Thermoelastic Waves with Thermal Relaxations

K. L. VERMA

Abstract

Effects of relaxation times and coupling on wave spectrum in generalized theories of thermoelasticity with and without energy dissipation is studied. Generalized characteristic equations applicable to the theories of thermoelasticity; extended Lord and Schulman (ELS), Lord and Schulman (LS), Green Lindsay (GL), coupled thermoelasticity (CT) and Green and Naghdi (GN) are derived to investigate the dispersion behavior of thermoelastic waves. Characteristic equations developed resolves two waves, one approaching to the longitudinal mechanical wave velocity and other to the thermal wave velocity. The characteristic features of
the underlying theories are analyzed in light of the obtained results and their counterparts in earlier works. Thermo-mechanical coupling and thermal relaxation times are found to have a non-negligible influence on the phase velocities of thermoelastic waves. Comparison is brought about between extended ELS model and the existing LS and GL models nickel material and found that ELS model is qualitatively more similar to those of LS model. The amount of attenuation or damping is shown to have large values when the slope of dispersion curves is steep.
