A Confidence System for Solving Real-World Problems with Argumentation

Laura Rassbach de Vesine

Although argumentation systems are a promising method for addressing complex problems in human reasoning, few such systems have been fully implemented. Unexpected challenges, especially in representing confidence, arise when implementing a system for solving real problems. This paper presents a fully detailed method for representing and comparing confidence. This method uses a two-dimensional vector, representing the authority of the knowledge used in reasoning and the level of resemblance the current situation bears to the original knowledge. I have fully implemented this confidence mechanism in Calvin, a simple argumentation system, and applied it to solving real problems in two quite different fields with significant success.

applications of argumentation, heuristic problem solving, reasoning under uncertainty, confidence.
